Ty's Herp Guide

This is Ty's guide to all 147+ native species of Reptiles and Amphibians to Virginia; plus a few introduced and common escapees as well. This guide is constantly evolving as new species are being described, and new identification info is coming to light. We also hope to include more features in the future! 

Amphibians

Frogs (Anura)

There are 28 native frog species in the commonwealth; and yes, toads are a family within frogs.

This is our most numerous group of herps in Virginia, with over 55 species calling the state home.

Turtles (Testudines)

Turtles are very unique reptiles, that really are not too closely related to the others. There are 23 turtle species that are native to Virginia.

Lizards are very abundant in Virginia, although there are only 9 native species to the commonwealth.
